” The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. “
To be the mother of God! What power I will have! What will I do with it? I’ll smite enemies; those I don’t like, those that offend me. I will make whatever I want, do whatever I will. All will submit to me. All will fear me.
“My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name. And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him…..
Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. “
What kind of “knowing” would lead one to accept the angel’s words? Knowing? Certainly a humility beyond anything any other mortal is capable of in order to accept the charge of being the Mother of God. “Knowing” the power of God, there could be a certain temptation to accept the words with another intention. But Mary turned herself totally toward God’s will putting it first and foremost; I would have been tempted to put myself, armed with such power, first. Mary was also steadfast her calling; was she ever tempted to misuse her great power? Nothing is said about this but all on this earth suffer temptation – even Jesus – so it is likely that she did too but clearly the devil lost.
